Veneers are ultra-thin shells of ceramic (porcelain) or a composite resin material, which are bonded to the front of teeth.
The veneers are custom-made for the patient, to cover one tooth or several teeth.
With their excellent light reflection property they can be made to look almost identical to your natural teeth.
The bonded (plastic) veneers, where a special aesthetic filling is used, are made either by the dental technician, using the same procedure as for a full ceramic porcelain veneer, or they can be created directly on your teeth by the dentist.
Dental veneers are used for a variety of reasons, for instance for irregular or worn down teeth or in case of larger gaps between the teeth, when teeth have been discoloured, damaged/broken/chipped, etc. in other words mostly for aesthetic reasons.
Before the decision is made a careful procedure is taken in full agreement of both patient and dentist.
It is of utmost importance that the wish of the patient is fully understood, before the selected treatment is initiated.
The procedure of deciding the complete look of your new teeth is in short accordingly:
First of all a full range of photos are taken of the present smile, which are sent to the technician, who will use digital imaging to produce a suggestion of a new improved smile. This is discussed with the patient, who will either accept it or ask for a new suggestion.
The dentist will make an impression of your teeth, send this to the technician, who will make a wax up with calculations made on how much to remove of the present teeth, in order to fit in the dental veneers.
In many cases, minimal to no tooth preparation is needed when using porcelain veneers.
