Everyone wants healthy teeth and a beautiful smile. That’s why it is important to keep a good oral hygiene. If you do not take care of your teeth you are more likely to get dental problems such as plaque, tartar, tooth decay and gingivitis, just to mention a few. The most important advice any dentist would give you is to brush your teeth twice a day and to do regular dental check-ups. Our dentist at Tandcity in Copenhagen gives you 5 great oral hygiene that will help you get stronger and longer lasting teeth.

1. Do regular dental check-ups

Read our dentists tips for a better oral hygiene The most import advice to ensure a better oral hygiene is, without a doubt, to brush your teeth twice a day. But brushing your teeth is not always good enough. We recommend that you visit your dentist at least twice a year in order to reduce the risk of more serious dental problems.

During your dental check-ups your dentist will examine your teeth and take x-ray photos in order to discover possible severe dental problems, such as mouth cancer. Your dentist will also remove tartars and reduce the risk of tooth decay.

2. Brush your teeth regularly

As mentioned earlier, the easiest and probably the most important way to ensure a good oral hygiene is to brush your teeth twice a day. When you brush your teeth you should hold the toothbrush in a 45 degree angle brush close to your gum. Also brush both the inside and outside area of your teeth, using back and forth and up and down movements. But be careful and don’t brush to hard. Otherwise you might bleed from your gum. It is also advised to brush your tongue in order to remove and reduce bad breath.

3. Use dental floss to improve your oral hygiene

Another effective tip that our dentist in Copenhagen recommends for a better oral hygiene is to use dental floss. Unfortunately, most people today often skip this part in their daily routine. But using a dental floss after brushing your teeth can help you remove bacteria and small particles, which a regular toothbrush cannot remove. Dental floss also reduces the risk of plaque. As a result, you should always use dental floss at least once a day.

4. Use a mouthwash after brushing your teeth

Using a mouthwash is not always necessary and there are many products on the market that are not very effective. However, with the right product you can imporve your oral hygiene. But ensure that the mouthwash that you are using contains listerine and/or chlorine dioxide as these ingredients effectively removes bacteria that can cause severe dental problems. At the same, mouthwash can also eliminate bad breath.

5. Clean your tongue

Using a professional tongue scraper after brushing your teeth can remove numerous bacteria and left-overs, which would otherwise stay on your tongue. Not only can these bacteria cause bad breath but they could also cause severe dental problems such as plaque and gingivitis.

Using a tongue scraper is easy. Simply pull out your tongue and start scraping it, from the back and all the way to the front. But be careful and don’t press to hard, otherwise you might trigger your gag reflexes. Finally rinse your mouth with water.

If you have any question regarding your oral hygiene please visit our dentist in Copenhagen or contact us today. We are more than happy to help.

Everyone wants healthy and strong teeth that last for a life time. Studies show that regular dental check-ups give healthier and nicer teeth that last longer. But not everyone wants to visit their dentist twice a year. In this article we will give you 5 reasons why you should do regular dental check-ups

1. Discover mouth cancer before it’s too late

Mouth cancer is a serious disease that can be developed in many different ways. Unfortunately, mouth cancer is most of the times not discover in its early stages and can quickly develop and become life threatening. Luckily, mouth cancer that is diagnosed in its early stages is easy to treat and remove. That is also one of the reason why you should do regular dental check-ups. By examining your oral health and discover possible life-threatening diseases in their early stages, you will have much better chance of treating them

2. Remove and reduce plaque, tartar and tooth decay

How often should you do dental check-ups As you probably already know, you should brush your teeth and use dental floss twice a day in order to keep your teeth strong and healthy. But no matter how often you brush your teeth there will always be small areas where a regular tooth brush won’t be able to reach. These areas often contain small particles that, during a longer period of time, create plague and tartar, and which are difficult to remove without help from a dentist.

If tartar is left on your teeth without being removed they can cause tooth decay and in some cases severe pain. When you are doing your dental check-up your dentist will clean your teeth and remove any tartar. As a result, you will be able to reduce the risk of tooth decay and avoid expensive dentist visit by doing regular dental check-ups.

3. Reduce the risk for gingivitis by doing regular dental check-ups

Plaque and tartar does not only cause tooth decay but also gingivitis. This gum disease is caused when plaque infects the gum tissues that combines the gum and your teeth. If gingivitis is left untreated you could, in worst case, end up losing your teeth.

Treating gingivitis is often very expensive and required numerous special treatment such as surgery, extreme deep cleansing and medication. As a result, you should visit you dentist twice a year in order to reduce the risk of gingivitis.

4. Get control of bad habits

There are numerous of bad habits that can negatively affect your dental hygiene. You might even do these habits on a daily basis without knowing that they could harm your teeth. Some of these habits include biting your nails, brushing your teeth too hard and chewing ice.

When you visit your dentist for your regular dental check-up he or she will look for damages that are cause by these bad habits. In that way you will get informed about your bad habits, which you didn’t even knew was harmful for your teeth.

5. Discover unknown gum diseases with x-ray.

One of the most important way to discover damages on your teeth and gum is to take x-ray photos. X-ray allows your dentist to discover damages on your teeth and gum, which cannot otherwise be seen. One example of a common gum disease which can only be seen with X-ray is when your wisdom tooth is being blocked from growing out of your gum. X-ray can also discover and identify other gum diseases such as mouth cancer. As a result, you should go regular dental check-ups in order to discover and avoid serious gum diseases.

5 myths about mouthwash

Many Swedes are using mouthwash as a daily routine. It is said that mouthrinse is a good complement to regular tooth brushing and that it can reduce the risk of gingivitis. But what is the truth about mouthwash? Is it good or bad for your dental hygiene? In this article we list 5 myth about mouthwash that you should be aware of.

1. All mouthwash products are equally good

Myths about mouthwash
Today you’ll find numerous of different mouthwash products on the market and many people believe that they are all more or less equally good. But don’t let yourself get fouled by the advertisements. There are in fact two different kinds of products; cosmetic and therapeutic. Cosmetic mouthrinse are effective in removing food waste from your teeth and gum, reducing bacteria and reducing bad breath. However, these kinds of products are not very effecting in reducing the risk for tooth decay.

Therapeutic mouthwash, on the other hand, contains active ingredients such as chlorhexidine and fluoride, which actively reduce the risk for tooth decay and plaque. In order to ensure good dental hygiene, always choose a mouthrinse that contains one of these active ingredients.

2. Using mouthwash on a daily basis is not harmful

Wrong. Many mouthrinse products contains large doses of alcohol, which in the long run could cause mouth dryness and cause bad breath. Some studies also shows that mouthrinse products with high alcohol content could cause mouth cancer. However, these studies are limited and should not be fully trusted.

If you are worrying about the side effect from mouthrinse products, we recommend you to use non-alcohol products, which can easily be find in my stores. But be aware. Alcohol is not the single harmful ingredient. Many mouthwash also contains chlorhexidine, which could also have a harmful impact on your gum and teeth.

3. Mouthwash prevents bad breath

One of the most common reason for using mouthwash is to remove bad breath. However, bad breath does not only come from your mouth. Bad breath also comes from your lungs, caused from the food you are eating, and as a result, mouthrinse can only temporarily remove bad breath.

4. A good mouthwash can be used instead of a normal tooth brush

It is true that mouthrinse can improve your dental hygiene and reduce the risk for serious dental problems. But be aware, mouthrinse can never replace a proper brushing. Cleaning your teeth and gums with a toothbrush and a dental floss twice a day reduce more plaque and bacteria than mouthrinse. So if you are using mouthrinse, do so only as complement to regular tooth brushing.

5. A quick rinse and spit is good enough

Are you using mouthwash and only rinse for a few seconds before you spit it out? In that case you are not alone. Using mouthrinse can be a uncomfortable experience and sometimes even burn your gum. But in order to get the most out of the product you should rinse your mouth for at least 30 seconds before you spit out. In that case all the active ingredients are put in action and more bacteria will be removed.
